SOE experts and their role after an earthquake

16 September 2024 – If you think that earthquakes in Switzerland pose no risk, then you are wrong: every person in Switzerland experiences at least one earthquake in their lifetime that causes serious damage to buildings. The EDO experts are needed to estimate this damage as quickly as possible.

The earthquake risk in Switzerland is considerable. This is partly due to its geographical location and partly due to its dense population. The aggregate damage can quickly run into the billions. After an earthquake, the earthquake loss organisation EDO helps to estimate how much it will cost to rebuild the buildings. This requires human and technical resources to assess the damaged buildings and estimate these costs.

Why do we all need EDO experts?

An earthquake can cause severe damage to buildings, which can lead to insurance claims. In order to facilitate rapid reconstruction, the EDO mobilises its experts to assess buildings and estimate the damage. These estimates form the basis for the calculation and payment of insurance benefits, for the payment of aid to owners or for applications by the cantons for federal financial aid.
